Messiah dashed back upstairs and into the master bedroom. He dropped to his knees but didn’t see anything but shoe boxes. He swatted them aside, but it was obvious there was no safe.

He stood up and yelled, “Ain’t no safe under the bed!”

“Lift the bed out of the way and move the carpet!” Dee Dee replied.

“Why that dumb bitch ain’t say so in the first place?” he mumbled to himself as he snatched up the mattress and box spring. When he lifted the rug, a smile licked his face like a spark igniting a forest fire, as he stared at the enormous safe.

“Hell, yeah.” he breathed.

Messiah got down and spun the dial to the tune of Peanut’s agony: 38-41-16. When it opened, the smell of money kissed him in the face like a sleeping princess. He had never seen so much money at one time in his life. He knew it had to be over a million dollars easy.

“You got it, Daddy?!” Dee Dee yelled from downstairs.

“Yeah!” he hollered back, then the next thing he heard were shots.

Buck! Buck! Buck! Buck!

Messiah knew right then that she had killed Peanut and the bitch.

“Damn, she go hard,” Messiah admired Dee Dee’s steel, but there was no way she was leaving the house alive.

He heard her come up the stairs and enter the room. He was too busy putting more bundles of cash into pillow cases that he didn’t notice her vibe until he felt cold metal against his temple.

Messiah froze.

“Nigga, the only reason I ain’t gonna kill you is cause you got some good dick. Don’t make me change my mind,” Dee Dee spat with the grit of a female pitbull.

Messiah snarled but his fingers flexed uselessly. “Bitch, I counted four shots, plus the other two. She empty!”

“Mine is,” she snickered. “But yours isn’t.”

Messiah had tossed his gun aside when he started bagging the money.

She had picked it up from the bed he had moved aside to get at the safe beneath.

“Nothin’ beats the double cross but the triple cross, nigga,” Dee Dee said triumphantly. “But I don’t feel bad, because I know you were gonna do the same thing to me.”

“Come on, ma. I was takin’ you to the Boro with me,” Messiah offered. A last roll of the bones.

“New York, I wasn’t born last night. Trust me. Now. Hurry up and bag my money,” Dee Dee ordered.

Messiah was seething, but he wasn’t stupid. He had already seen what she was capable of, so he definitely wasn’t about to try nothing. But if she slipped…

He put all the money in the bed sheet and knotted the top because it was too much to fit in the pillow cases. When he finished, he started to get up.

“No. Stay on the floor and strip.”

“Strip?”

“Yes. New York. Strip. Now nigga.”

He stopped at his boxers.

“Everything,” she demanded. It was clear from her voice and face that she was enjoying the power she had over him. He stepped out of his boxers.

“Now drag the money downstairs. And New York, if you do anything stupid, I won’t hesitate to drop you, got me?” Dee Dee warned.
